“I would rather be fit than rich” This has been my lifelong motto. Although often used as an excuse to be lazy, it is something I truly believe. Hence the latest fitness craze excites me. Its wonderful to see so many people joining gyms, beginning running programs, forming sports clubs. Getting lean and strong is definitely on the mind. So whether you are a “dumbbell darling” – women who love to lift or “mamil” – middle-aged man in lycra, fitness is the new status symbol.

I do hope this trend is here to stay. We have seen fitness fads come and go all to often. I remember the late 80’s (yes, I’m that old) when hightops, sports gear and headbands were the height of fashion, only to be lost in the power dressing, Gucci flashing of the 90’s.

Fashion seems to repeat itself every 30 years. Here we are again with hightops and fit = fashion making a comeback. This time round I hope we take a long-term view. We need to view fitness in the way we view finance. While having a six-pack, toned arms and a gravity-defying bum at 30 is wonderful, you need to consider if your fitness regime is risking ill-health in later life. Running is wonderful, but not if you are damaging your knees. Building lean muscle is important as it confers strength, but carrying too much muscle may make you inefficient in your day-to-day activities. Bodybuilders do not run marathons for a reason.

Every person’s body is different. It is very important that you work to your own personal ability. Build sufficient muscle and maintain a fitness regime that makes you more efficient. The point is to make your body healthier, fitter and stronger for longer. Whatever your regime, ensure that you can maintain it for the next decade.

Hence I get to the point of this article. Success = Balance!

Fitness, Finance, Fun – all in balance.
